Why here of all places
North-west Bulgaria is closer to southern Romania than most Romanian mountains are. You cross the Danube and, about two hours from the bridge, you are under the Vratsa cliffs.
The area has stayed quieter than Rila or Pirin: no lift, no resort, no queues. For a short weekend that is an advantage rather than a drawback.

The Calafat–Vidin bridge
The simplest crossing, open around the clock. From Vidin to Vratsa the road is a main one.

The Bechet–Oryahovo ferry
Shorter if you come from Craiova, but it runs to a timetable. Check it before you set off — it is not ours and it changes.

What you need
An ID card or passport, and for the car a Bulgarian vignette, bought online or at the border. Our tours need no motorcycle licence.
Toll charges and the ferry timetable are not our data and they change — check them at the source before travelling.
It works as a single day
Leave in the morning, cross the Danube, reach Vratsa around midday, ride in the afternoon and be back in the evening. “Skaklya” takes about an hour, “In Botev’s Footsteps” about two and a half — both fit into one unhurried day.

Do I need a licence?
Not for our bikes — the routes run on forest tracks away from public roads. For the car, of course; and a Bulgarian vignette.
How long is the drive from Romania?
About two hours from the Calafat–Vidin bridge to Vratsa. From Craiova via the Bechet–Oryahovo ferry the drive is shorter, but it depends on the timetable.
Is Romanian spoken?
Write or call ahead and we will sort it out for your date. The site and the confirmations are in Romanian, and the briefing is largely showing and copying.
What happens if it rains?
We ride in light rain — the gear covers that. In genuinely bad weather we move the time or the day; we do not set off just to have set off.
